DSLB is the solo project of Chrissie Butler. As an offshoot from Chrissie’s band Ditzy Squall, DSLB (Ditzy Squall’s Lunch Box) began as a space to explore a more low-fi approach to song writing. Blokebird was the first DSLB release.

More interested in the long ambient run-outs than the lyrics, Chrissie began to nudge DSLB into the sound art, noise improv space mixing up field recordings, with long repeating patterns and analogue sonics. Two releases reflect this shift in focus: Two Hands Twice recorded during an Arts Residency at the South Pacific Studio and Passonings, recorded as a podcast for the Pyramid Club.

Wellington’s Pyramid Club is home base for DSLB live. Chrissie has performed DSLB sets regularly since 2018, playing alongside a host of local and international performers. Occasionally DSLB has ventured further from home and has been seen in Singapore and Seoul.

DSLB sound projects often feature a video component. Composition is often a solitary process. Hours spent with headphones on. Making video is a fast format for making the composition process visible or “looking at sound” and getting a fresh perspective on an idea. The videos below were created during the sound art residency as Driving Creek Railway in 2023.

Alongside the in-house recording projects for Skirted Records, Chrissie has composed soundtracks for 2 short films and a music video for the DSLB track, “Lucky Hunt”.

Hand drawn comics are also residents in the lunch box. A large form zine is currently in development.
